About Dr. shepherd

Formal Training

Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM), 2006

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Biomedical and Veterinary Sciences, 2012

Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Nutrition (DACVN) since 2013

Background

After graduating from veterinary school in 2006, Dr. Shepherd was a general practitioner at Damascus Equine Associates in Maryland for two years. Dr. Shepherd completed a comparative (all species) nutrition residency in 2012 and has been a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Nutrition (ACVN) since 2013.

In 2021, the ACVN joined the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM), thus Dr. Shepherd is now a Diplomate of the ACVIM (Nutrition).

Dr. Shepherd directed the Nutrition Service at the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine from 2012-2022. Dr. Shepherd has primarily provided nutrition solutions for companion dogs, horses, cats and pigs. In addition to clinical service, Dr. Shepherd taught nutrition to veterinary students, conducted research on overweight management and nutrition implementation and helped to advance the college's diversity equity and inclusion (DEI) efforts.

Dr. Shepherd established Veterinary Clinical Nutrition in 2021 to expand her nutrition practice. Dr. Shepherd primarily works with patients that have chronic disease(s), but is happy to help guide owners/caregivers in what to feed to help maintain health and prevent illness. Currently, in addition to running Veterinary Clinical Nutrition, Dr. Shepherd continues to provide nutrition education to veterinarians and veterinary students. Outside of work, Dr. Shepherd enjoys spending time with Bryan (partner), Bobby Sue (rotten walker hound) and Mae (anxious walker hound), volunteering with the New River Valley Chapter of Virginia Organizing, running, paddle boarding & kayaking, camping and traveling.
